In patients with prostate cancer, it is obligatory to assess the baseline kidney function before PSMA radioligand therapy and to detect possible renal disorders at an early stage. This is performed using renal scintigraphy, which is also used for follow-up after PRLT.
How does a renal scintigraphy work?
The patient lies down supine under a gamma camera. The radiopharmaceutical (TC-99m-MAG3) is injected intravenously, after which dynamic images of the kidneys are acquired for 30 minutes. Following the examination, a blood sample is withdrawn for further analysis. If necessary, delayed static imaging of the kidneys after emptying the bladder may be required.
What should I pay attention to as a patient?
You do not need to be fasting for the kidney scintigraphy. Before the examination, however, it is necessary that you drink about one liter of fluids.
